Community with Kathy Anderson

Please join us as we shine a light on Kathy Anderson, one of our wonderful artists, as we ask what it takes to be a part of the artist community.

“Hi, I’m Kathy Anderson.

So a little bit about me- I’ve always been a “black and white” sort of person, meaning I either love something or hate it, hardly anything in between! However, if I had to describe myself as an artist, I’m probably a colorist – I’m drawn to beautiful color, it’s my inspiration and where my ideas come from. Following that, my passion is the world of gardens, flowers, the landscape, and all the creatures with fur and feathers that inhabit those environments.”

“I have to say my real “art” life began with meeting the renowned Richard Schmid when he purchased one of my paintings at an art show he was supporting (probably 25+ years ago) and subsequently invited me to join the Putney Painters. There I was introduced to a whole new world of unbelievable painters, professionalism, camaraderie, joyfulness, and mostly dedicated artists striving to be the best they could be.”

Through the years of my career since meeting Richard, I can say I am most proud of the fact that I was always willing to take risks. I entered shows over and over before I was qualified (and got rejected from many!). I applied to enter Plein air shows when I didn’t even know what they were, got accepted and thus began a whole new chapter of growing as an artist and beginning a long teaching career when I was unsure of myself, which led to fulfillment in being able to share all that I have learned. Making life long friends throughout all these adventures and still learning, learning, learning, which I’ll do until I can’t hold a brush anymore!

This last year culminated in my biggest risk—having a solo show with 46 paintings at the National Arts Club in NYC and it was a SUCCESS!”

“Kathy and I have been friends for a lot of years. You know when you meet someone in life, by chance, and you ‘click’? Well, that was Kathy and me. She is such a special friend, and we have so much fun together. When I watch Kathy paint, it’s like seeing a vision explode before my eyes. Her sense of colour and movement in a painting is so beautiful.

As a surprise, I flew to New York especially for Kathy’s solo show. It was overwhelming to see a room so full of her beautiful artwork, and yes, of course, I made a purchase. Who could resist!

In Kathy’s work, I can see Richard (Schmid) and the countless times I’ve witnessed him peering over her shoulder critiquing! He would then turn away and smile. He too could see Kathy’s journey evolving and progressing. I personally see Kathy as one of the greatest living floral artists of today.

Three cheers for Kathy Anderson.”
