Kathleen Speranza Workshop May 2023

This workshop will take place from Monday 22-26th May 2023.

Kathleen will be teaching floral still-life indoors with an indirect method and limited palette.

“Some painting experience is necessary since it is a technically advanced subject. With that said, there are no other requirements as long as the student doesn’t mind being thrown into the deep end of the pool!”

The Beautiful Artwork of Phil Courtney

Phil Courtney is a long time user of Rosemary Brushes and it is about time we shared his absolutely stunning work with you all. Phil graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts located in Philadelphia and has been in the industry ever since. Exquisite both in Oil and Water colour,  Phil always manages to capture the beauty of his subject material.

magnificent-magnolia-small_orig
flower-fireworks-lt_orig I am amazed how he gets his paintings to look so realistic, especially with the sheer size of the canvases, (some 41″ x 57″!). To get the perspective and proportion so on point, I think you will agree it can be a challenge even on a smaller scale, but Phil does it with such precision and realism, and I can only imagine the patience he puts into them!

The oil painting below -Magnolia Seed Pod  22″ x 54″ – oil on canvas, is featured in the July/August 2021 of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine and it was painted solely using only Rosemary brushes!

Alex Venezia – Debut Workshop!

Learn to paint the portrait from the model.

We are excited to welcome the wonderful Alex Venezia to Yorkshire, with his debut workshop in June 2022.

We recommend if you are flying long haul, you come in a couple of days earlier and stay a day or so later so you can rest and not feel rushed.

The course will start at 9am and each day we will paint until 5pm. We will break for 1 hour each lunchtime. Please arrive at 8.45am each day (location will be the Rosemary & Co workshop in Yorkshire, England).

In the mornings, Alex will demonstrate and in the afternoons, you will paint and Alex will go around individually and offer critique.

Throughout the 5 days we will work on the portrait, from the same model. The model fee is included in this workshop fee. The model will start at 9am and finish at 5pm each day, breaking for a 1 hour lunch.

Alex’s method will be indirect, working in layers, rather than the Alla Prima style. Alex will provide ample critique and you will also see a finished demonstration by the end of the workshop.

One evening there will be a demonstration by Alex, painting his wife who is also a painter and will be joining us for the workshop, Divya Melaluca. Divya has been Alex’s main muse for his recent debut solo show at Arcadia Gallery in Pasadena, California.

You will need to bring with you a compact easel to paint from. You will be sent a materials list towards the end of 2021, giving you plenty of time to get what is required for the course. Needless to say, you can purchase many things from our showroom including the brushes Alex uses – however, we do not sell panels and I don’t have spare easels.

We have 5 rooms at our on-site accommodation. This always sells first, and it is first-come, first served. Full payment is needed for the accommodation, and the same rule for refunds applies to the accommodation. You can see all of these terms and conditions below the signup button. We have also introduced a code of conduct policy for 2020. Please familiarise yourself with this before signing up. For prices, and to book a space onsite, please contact Janine on [email protected]

Included in this workshop is your lunches each day, the model fee, two evening meals and drinks and the demonstration evening. You will need to organise your own accommodation (we can help you!) and you will need to organise your own travel arrangements. If you are flying from outside of the UK, you should try and fly into either Manchester (if flying outside the EU) or into Leeds/Bradford Airport if within the EU. I can arrange for a taxi to pick you up (From Manchester, 1.5 hour is around £85 one way, from Leeds/Bradford, 45 minutes is around £40 one way). If you would like me to arrange these transfers, just ask.

We always recommend you look at Cowling Hill Top Farm for accommodation once our on-site is full. It’s a 5-minute drive from the workshop. We also recommend Steeton Hall once Cowling Hill Top Farm is filled. Though you will not need a car for the week, if you do want to hire one, we do have plenty of parking.

If you have any questions about this course, please don’t hesitate to email me: [email protected]

We look forward to welcoming you to a wonderful week filled with painting and inspiration. I am genuinely, super excited to welcome Alex and Divya to Yorkshire! Yippee!

Lori Putnam – Staithes 2022

We’re heading back to Staithes with the wonderful Lori Putnam for 2022! This will be Lori’s third workshop with us – and what can I say? She is an incredible teacher.

In 2019 we hosted our first workshop on the coastline of Yorkshire with Lori and it was such a success we have decided to host another!

This is a 5 day workshop from the 6-10th of June 2022. Accommodation is included in this workshop.

We recommend if you are flying long haul, you come in a couple of days earlier and stay a day or so later so you can rest and not feel rushed. You will need to make your own way to Staithes from Manchester Airport (recommended airport to fly into). I can arrange a taxi for you, but you’d be best looking for the trains from the airport to Saltburn on Sea. I can assure you, the trip is well worth it. Trains are the least expensive way to get there unless there’s two of you and in which case I would recommend sharing a taxi.

During the workshop we will be based in the beautiful, quaint village of Staithes. We will spend a good amount of time painting there. We will also spend time in the neighbouring village of Runswick Bay.

This workshop will include demonstrations and lessons, as well as both individual and group assignments and critiques.

One of the evenings we will have a top notch cook come into our accommodation and cook a beautiful meal for us. This is included in the course fee. We did this last time and it was a big hit. We also make all of your lunches (lunch box style) and breakfast each day! This is included in the course price. For evening meals, we will go out and eat together most evenings at the local pubs in Staithes.

You don’t need transport for the workshop. If I’m heading to the supermarket and you need something, I can happily get it for you. Also, when we do travel to Runswick Bay, we will have enough folks with cars to share.

Accommodation is covered in the fee, and I have found the most perfect spot for us to all stay and share the experience. The accommodation covers 5 nights of the workshop. If you’d like additional nights, let me know and I can arrange that for you (it will cost per night, but it can be done). The accommodation is pre-chosen before you arrive – and I must let you know that Staithes is an old English village. Please don’t expect Uber here! It’s lucky they now take credit cards! The water might come slower than you are used to, and the door might creak a little… but trust me, this place is just simply beautiful. The accommodation has a large shared dining room and lounge, which also doubles up as somewhere for us to take shelter should it rain.

This workshop is honestly a joy to run, and I hope you will join myself and Lori. We’ve done enough workshops between us now to know how to make this one of the best painting weeks of your life. One you will not forget, and hopefully you’ll leave feeling full of inspiration, with new friends and some lovely paintings to boot!

Join us today! Limited availability due to the class size and accommodations.

See you in Staithes!

Oil PAINTING around YORKSHIRE By Luiz Vilela

Luiz visited us in Yorkshire for almost a month this Summer. The images shown are quick Plein Air studies, on the go!

I spent the month of June painting in Yorkshire, England. It is one of the most beautiful places in the whole world and paradise beauty for any artist.

Rosemary & Co Artists’ Brushes hosted two painting workshops in their premises and around the area. The first one with Michelle Dunaway, we were out and about painting the landscape and the figure in the landscape. Michelle was a wonderful adviser, always helpful and sharing her thoughts in art and the life of an artist. A true inspiration! We had a fantastic time painting at Bolton Abbey for two days.

On the second day, we painted model Ross dressed in character – A real Yorkshire man! I didn’t feel the time passing by, I was so immersed in capturing the scene. I stayed for the second workshop with Michael Klein, painting florals. I’ve been such a fan of his work so it was like a dream for me to be able to paint flowers with him. The set was Rosemary’s orangery, a stunning place and each student had the most beautiful flower arrangement to work from. In the mornings, we watched Michael develop his own piece, and I had to sit really close to him and see how he handled the paint and his brushwork technique.

“I LEARNT that the POSSIBILITIES of painting are INFINITE!”

We all watch videos but nothing compares to the experience of observing an artist responding to his subject matter right in front of you. With these workshops, I learnt that the possibilities of painting are infinite! And more: it helped me to find out what is really important to me. I also had the opportunity to explore the area on the days before and in between classes. I met old and new friends and enjoyed the camaraderie whilst going to places like Haworth (where the Brontë sisters lived) small villages in the neighbourhood and idyllic places like Malham Cove.

yorkshire 1

Last but not least there were Rosemary and Symi (who showed us how to make brushes in two demos and shared tips on how to take care of your brushes – really helpful!) and their team striving to make our experience unforgettable! I like to quote from the master:

“There are moments in our lives, there are moments in a day, when we seem to see beyond the usual – become clairvoyant. We reach then into reality. Such are the moments of our greatest happiness. Such are the moments of our greatest wisdom. It is in the nature of all people to have these experiences; but in our time and under the conditions of our lives, it is only a rare few who are able to continue in the experience and find expression for it.” – Robert Henri
